WIPO Forum in Colombo, Sri Lanka: ¡ÈIntellectual Property and Environmentally Sound Technology¡É

The WIPO Regional Forum ¡ÈIntellectual Property and Environmental Sound Technology¡É was held On May 29 and 30, 2012, In Colombo, Sri Lanka, Mr. Yorimasa Suwa (from Teijin) made a speech on WIPO Green as a representative of the Green Technology Package Project Team.

In past discussions on global warming, developing countries raised the concern that patent systems encumbered transfer of green technologies. In response, COP16 resolved two years ago that a system to promote technology transfer should be established. WIPO Green is a proactive and practical initiative to tackle this issue. Mr. Suwa talked about the activities of WIPO Green and explained that Japanese green technologies were registered and actively made available in the WIPO Green system. Although all the mistrust of patent systems might not necessarily be removed, his speech at the Forum could promote an understanding of our activities among attendees. He also received specific inquiries about individual technologies and agreed with attendees from ESCAP to collaborate in establishing a network.

The WIPO Regional Forum has been held twice per year each year in various regions throughout the world. The forum this year was co-hosted by WIPO, Sri Lanka and JPO, attracting attendees from governments, universities, and private companies from 12 countries (Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, Iran, Indonesia, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) administrative office.
