JIPA Awards in MTE 2016

  • Green Technology Award
  • Biotechnology Award
  • Design Award
  • Meeting with MOSTI

Malaysia Technology Expo(MTE) 2016 was held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur on February 17 and 18, 2016. JIPA provided the following 3 special awards: Green Technology Award, Biotechnology Award, and Design Award.
This year, for the promotion of WIPO GREEN, Ms. Seshimo (JGC) of the WIPO Project participated in the event. Through document screening and hearings on about 500 entries, the following 3 inventions were chosen for the JIPA awards.

JIPA Green Technology Award

Invention: Bioelectricity: Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) at Sewage Treatment Plant
Inventors: Zulhasrizal Bin Bohari, Mohd Hafiz Jali, Nur Asyhikin Azhari, Mohamad Fani Sulaima,
Tg Nurhaziqah Raja Ibrahim & Tarmizi Ahmad
Organization: University Technical Malaysia Melaka
Summary: Fuel cell power generation system utilizing microorganisms. 24-hour power generation available using sewage water --- the inventors emphasizes the system's higher sustainability than that of solar energy. Successful modularization of the system in an effort to reduce the assembly cost was highly regarded. Next year, this system will be introduced by a sewage company.

JIPA Biotechnology Award

Invention: Handy Z-Spray (Injury healing Spray)
Inventors: Zulhazman Hamzah, Zulhisyam Bin Abdul Kari Abdullah, Mohammad Khairul Azhar Bin Abdul Razab, Mohammed Aurifullah, K.N.S Sirajudeen
Organization: University Malaysia Kelantan
Summary: Medicinal components extracted from Alocasia odra were commercialized as a spray-type disinfectant and an adhesive tape for treating cuts and the like. Each spray is priced at about \500, which can be reduced if the production is increased. The university grows the plant in their farm and also operates the extraction. The extraction method is unique and patented, and the combination of a traditional plant and the latest extraction technique was highly regarded.

JIPA Design Award

Invention: Green Prefabricated Wall Constructed Using Wood-Wool Cement Composite Panel
Inventors: Mohammad Soffi Md Noh, Dr. Zakiah Ahmad, Dr. Azmi Ibrahim, Muhammad Tarmizi Ismail
Organization: Institute for Infrastructure Engineering and Sustainable Management
Summary: Building panel reusing waste materials, produced by kneading and compressing wood cut into strings and sand. The inventors said that the panel has heat insulation, sound insulation, and fire resistant properties and is also effective for termite control. The panel is lightweight and thus easy to handle. In addition to the excellent properties, the panel's unique appearance, looking like tangled and pressed wool yarns, was a conclusive reason for the selection.

In the opening ceremony of the event, we had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Madius, Minister of Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation, Malaysia. We discussed the transfer of Malaysian technologies to foreign countries and were able to let him know about WIPO GREEN.
