WIPO GREEN Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya

A joint workshop on environmental issues was held in Nairobi, Kenya from June 24 to 26, 2013, with the participation of the Kenya Climate Innovation Center, WIPO, JPO and the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI)
Mr. Suwa from the JIPA Green Technology Task Force participated in the meeting.

This workshop, entitled "Conference on Climate Change Innovation in Africa - Advancing Knowledge, Technology, Policy and Practice," attracted about 200 participants, including representatives from local companies and university researchers, from all around Africa (Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Benin, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Congo) and other countries.

In the workshop, the following four panel discussions were conducted:
“Climate Change Policy and legal landscape in Africa”
“Climate Change and its threat to Agriculture and Food Security, Sustainable Energy”
“IPRs in facilitating Innovation in Climate Change”
“Identification of appropriate Technologies for Climate change mitigation and adaption”
Representatives from local research institutes UNIDO and UNEP, and local activists outlined the environmental issues they face in their countries and regions, and explained local actions taken to improve the respective environments.

Mr. Suwa from JIPA introduced Japanese companies' technologies registered with WIPO GREEN, and also invited session participants to join the WIPO GREEN network.

Immediately before this workshop, the Tokyo International Conference on African Development was held in Yokohama, in which the bilateral credit between Kenya and Japan was explained. As attention had been drawn to Kenya and Japan, this session was very timely.
