Global Business Symposium for Executives in Tokyo

On June 3, 2016, JIPA held a Global Business Symposium for Corporate Executives at the UN University. This symposium, co-hosted by the Japan Business Federation "Nippon Keidanren" and WIPO, gathered 73 people from 43 organizations, including members of industrial associations, business management executives, and IP leaders, in which 4 speeches were given on the theme of "Vitalization of IP."

In the opening address and the first speech, Mr. Toshikazu Tanaka (Mitsui Chemicals), JIPA's Chairperson, introduced the situation of IP in the world with some data, discussing the importance of companies' own IP strategy.
Furthermore, Mr. Francis Gurry, Director General of WIPO made a speech entitled "Is Innovation on the Board Room Table?", emphasizing that IP strategy is becoming more and more important for companies and even for governments, and that the days of leaving the management of IP only to experts are over.
Mr. Okiharu Yasuoka, a member of the House of Representatives, introduced the IP strategy proposal by LDP's Policy Research Council released on April 21, and spoke on "What We Expect of Corporate Managers for Vitalization of the Domestic Industries." In this symposium, Mr. Asahiko Mihara, Mr. Kozo Yamamoto, members of the House of Representatives, and Mr. Shingo Miyake, a member of the House of Councilors from LDP visited the venue, and we received some comments from them.
Furthermore, Mr. Toshimoto Mitomo (Sony Corporation), Vice Chairperson of JIPA, introduced, in his speech titled "Domestic and Overseas IP Disputes," his experiences in the US and Europe with stories behind them.

Finally, Mr. Hidehiro Yokoo, Secretary-General, Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters, Cabinet Secretariat, made a remark, and Mr. Shingo Kaneko (Toppan Printing Co., Ltd.), Chair, Committee on Intellectual Property, Japan Business Federation, delivered a closing speech, and the symposium closed with the following Declaration on IP vitalization, made by Mr. Shingo Kaneko.
