【Registration Open】 3rd JIPA Overseas Associate Member Mini Seminar 2026 ~Explore the Latest IP Trends and Practices and Connect with JIPA Members~

1.About the Mini Seminar

Since July 2020, JIPA has offered video lectures by overseas associate members. In response to requests for more in-person opportunities, JIPA began holding this mini seminar in a hybrid format last year. This seminar provides a valuable opportunity to share the latest IP developments from various jurisdictions with JIPA members in a live setting. Seminar topics have been selected with the cooperation of JIPA committee members, reflecting areas of strong interest to Japanese companies and IP practitioners.

The seminar will be held in a hybrid format, so participants may join either on site at JIPA Tokyo or online via Teams. For those attending in person, the coffee break will offer a relaxed opportunity to exchange views with JIPA members, speakers, and other overseas associate members. We hope this will also serve as a friendly networking opportunity beyond the presentations themselves. We warmly welcome your participation.

Please see here for details.

The third seminar will feature presentations by JIPA Overseas Associate Members from Costa Rica, Brazil, China, and Germany, highlighting recent developments and practical strategies in international IP practice. Topics include the strategic importance of securing patent protection in Costa Rica, a key manufacturing hub in Central America, and filing strategies and challenges in obtaining patent protection for second medical uses in Brazil. The sessions on China will examine the implications of the amended Trademark Law, set to take effect in January 2027, for Japanese companies, as well as recent developments in judicial interpretations and patent infringement litigation.

The European sessions will cover a practical comparison of German national and European patent applications in terms of costs and prosecution procedures, re-establishment of rights before the European Patent Office (EPO), and the strategic use of preservation of evidence orders before the Unified Patent Court (UPC), including defensive measures. Procedures for challenging the validity of European patents and recent UPC and EPO case law will also be discussed. From patent filing and prosecution to enforcement and litigation, this seminar offers valuable practical insights to help IP professionals navigate the complexities of international patent practice.
